From Paul Rishell, a multiple Handy Award winner who has played with acclaimed bluesmen Son House and Howlin’ Wolf, I enhanced my knowledge and ability to play country acoustic blues, and it’s unique finger style and slide techniques. This included Delta and Piedmont-Style blues and more. In addition, Paul shared his expertise of the guitar playing styles of the masters of this genre, including Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Son House, Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Skip James, Blind Blake, Tampa Red, Tommy Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, and Django Reinhardt.

From the legendary blues guitarist and multiple Handy Award winner, Ronnie Earl (Big Walter, Roomful of Blues, Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters), I learned how important it is to play with a lot of feeling. In addition to learning how to play some of his original songs, I developed a greater appreciation for the playing styles of Magic Sam, T-Bone Walker, and Earl Hooker.

Another legendary blues/swing/jazz guitarist and founder of Roomful of Blues, Duke Robillard also taught me how to play in the styles of T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulson, and Magic Sam.

From Black Top recording artist, Bobby Radcliff, I asked for a deeper understanding of the playing styles and songs by Magic Sam, Buddy Guy, and his own originals. After playing with me and accessing my skills, he told me I didn’t need guitar lessons. Moreover, after listening to my band’s Live at Blues Alley CD, he gave it an excellent review.

As my band started playing more West Coast Swing, I decided to further my understanding of this style by taking David Hamburger’s Swing for the Blues Guitarist course. Dave is the author of best selling instructional book, Beginning Blues Guitar, which I have used with teaching my students. He writes for Guitar Player, is a contributing editor to Acoustic Guitar, and has scored soundtracks for jingles, TV shows, and movies.

I have taught beginners of all ages, as well as intermediate and advanced players seeking to improve their playing skills. I teach most styles of guitar including rock, pop, folk, rockabilly, swing and country. My specialty is teaching both traditional and modern blues . In addition I also teach finger picking and flat picking styles. I focus my instruction on the musical styles my students are interested in and create a curriculum customized to each students individual needs and preferences rather than follow one rigid course structure.

If you haven’t played in a while and want to get back into it, I can really help you regain your skills and move forward in the style you prefer.

I am dedicated to helping my students succeed and enjoy their learning experience. I believe that patience and focusing on individual needs have contributed to the success of my students in learning and advancing their guitar skills.

Unlike many guitar instructors, especially those working in large commercial teaching factories, I do not approach guitar lessons as a purely academic exercise. I do like to insure that my students gain a solid musical foundation while learning how to create music, play songs and enjoy themselves at all levels of experience.

My teaching skills have been recognized and appreciated by numerous students, many who have continued taking lessons from me for years. Take a look at what people are saying.

My specialty is teaching and performing blues guitar. Recently in recognition of my skills and dedication to music I was honored to be inducted into the Northern Virginia Blues Hall of Fame. I can teach acoustic and electric blues to all levels of students including beginners. This includes advanced skills and techniques required to play authentic country acoustic blues and slide guitar.

I’d welcome the opportunity to talk to you and answer any questions you might have about how I could help you or a family member play and enjoy the guitar. Give me a call and find out more.
